Cigarette Litter Prevention & Recycling Program (CLPP)

Keep New Hanover Beautiful’s largest initiative is to work with businesses, property owners and municipalities across New Hanover County to recycle their cigarette litter. In addition to New Hanover County locations, we have assisted both the Sunset Vision location in Sunset Beach, and the Town of Surf City in starting up their own CLPP campaigns!

Some Highlights

  • Since KNHB began this project in 2017, we have been awarded the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Grant four times. Thanks to this funding, to date we have recycled over ONE TON (2,000,000+) cigarette filters, and we're still going strong!

  • Our dedicated team of volunteers are responsible for maintaining over 400 collection canisters at 64 community partner sites in New Hanover County.

  • TerraCycle tells us that we are #10 in the entire country for cigarette butt recycling - among the likes of large cities and corporations (e.g., Amazon warehouses)!

What happens next?

After collections, waste is packaged and shipped to our corporate partners at TerraCycle.

"Once collected, the cigarettes and packaging are separated by composition and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The ash and tobacco are separated out and composted in a specialized process."
